There’s no single “block” button that covers every device, Wi-Fi, and cellular. Here are three reliable approaches and when to use each.
Option A — Block at the Router (home Wi-Fi)
Best for: younger kids on home Wi-Fi. Limits: doesn’t cover cellular or off-home networks.
- Open your router/mesh app (Eero, Orbi, Google Wi-Fi, etc.).
- Create a Profile for your child and assign their devices.
- Use app/site blocking for TikTok (e.g.,
tiktok.com
,musical.ly
, common CDN endpoints). - Enable SafeSearch/Adult categories if available.
Tip: Kids can bypass on cellular. Combine with Option C, or use NextDNS for coverage beyond the router.
Option B — NextDNS (works on Wi-Fi and cellular)
Best for: coverage anywhere + activity logs. Limits: savvy teens may try to change DNS.
- Create a NextDNS account and a dedicated Profile for your child.
- In Privacy, enable recommended blocklists; in Parental Control, block TikTok under Services.
- Install the NextDNS app on each device and log into the child profile, or set the profile’s DNS servers manually.
- Set a parental PIN in the app; disable “allow other DNS” if offered.
- Review Logs weekly and fine-tune allow/deny.
Hardening: iOS — use Screen Time to prevent account changes and app install/removal. Android/Chromebook — use Family Link admin controls.
Option C — On-Device Controls (Screen Time / Family Link)
Best for: balanced limits; age-appropriate use. Limits: app remains available during allowed windows.
- Apple: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy → Content Restrictions and App Limits. Set caps or block the app.
- Google Family Link: App limits for TikTok; restrict new installs; set Bedtime/Downtime.
- Microsoft Family Safety: App/website limits across Windows/Xbox; align with house rules.
When Filtering Beats Blocking
For older kids, hard blocks can push workarounds. Consider instead:
- Short, predictable daily caps (e.g., 30–45 min).
- Content category limits; keep Always Allowed tight.
- Weekly report reviews together (teach self-management).
Quick Mixes (choose one)
- Under 11: Router block + NextDNS on device.
- 11–13: NextDNS + Screen Time/Family Link caps.
- 14+: Time caps + reports; focus on conversations.
